How does Sojournal count a day?
Each rule counts days its own way, and Sojournal uses the definition the rule itself uses:
- Any part of a day counts as a full day for Schengen (entry and exit days included), the US Substantial Presence Test, New York and most US states, and Canada’s 183-day rule.
- Midnight: the UK Statutory Residence Test counts a day only if you are in the UK at the end of it. Portugal counts nights.
- Windows differ too: a calendar year, a tax year (the UK runs 6 April to 5 April), a rolling 180 days for Schengen, or any 12-month period for Ontario.
Tap any number in the app to see the window, the days that counted and why, and the next date the number changes. A day with no record is shown as Unknown and is never filled in by a guess.
Why is there no GPS tracking?
Because automatic tracking gets days wrong. Phones drop location in airplane mode, abroad without data, or when the app is closed in the background, and those gaps turn into missing days or trips that never happened.
In Sojournal you record the day yourself, which takes one tap: “here today” or “same as yesterday”. A range like 3 November to 10 April takes two. If you want help, pick photos and Sojournal suggests days from the date and place stored in them; nothing is saved until you confirm. The app never asks for location permission.
How do I move my data to a new phone?
- On the old phone: More → Back up to a file. Save the file to Files, iCloud Drive or Google Drive, or send it to yourself. Add the evidence zip if you attached receipts or boarding passes.
- On the new phone: install Sojournal, open More → Restore from a file and pick the file. Sojournal shows how many days and people it holds before anything changes.
The backup file works between iPhone and Android. There is no server and no account, so nobody else can recover your ledger for you: keep a recent backup somewhere safe.
How do I restore Pro?
Pro belongs to your Google or Apple account, not to the phone. On the new phone, sign in to the same store account, open the Pro screen and tap Restore purchases. A purchase can’t move between Google Play and the App Store.
The 7-day trial starts only when you tap it on the Pro screen, never at install. When Pro or the trial ends, every day you entered stays visible and exportable.
Can I export my data?
Yes, free: CSV for spreadsheets and JSON for a full backup. Pro adds an accountant pack (PDF) with the count, the day-by-day breakdown, the edit history and the evidence list.
Is this tax or legal advice?
No. Sojournal is a day counter. It counts days against published rules and shows the source of each rule, but residency also depends on things a day count can’t see: your home, family, work, ties and tax treaties. Ask a tax adviser or lawyer about your own situation.
For Schengen, the border guard’s count comes from the official Entry/Exit System (EES). Treat Sojournal as your own record and keep it in step with the EES.
The count looks wrong. What should I check?
- Days marked Unknown: fill them in, or the count shows a range.
- Travel days: a flight day can count for two places.
- The rule’s window: a tax year is not always the calendar year.
