Demijohn

Moving to Demijohn from paper, a spreadsheet or another app

You don’t need to copy everything across. For a batch that is still going, Demijohn needs a few lines from your notes, about two minutes per batch.

Four steps per running batch

  1. Add the batch. Pick the type (kit wine, fresh grape, fruit wine, mead, cider, perry, sparkling), the volume and the start date. Use the day you really pitched the yeast: the day counter and the template steps count from it.
  2. Your original gravity. Type the OG you measured, in the scale you use (SG, Brix, Oechsle, Blg, Babo or Baumé). If you added sugar or honey later, add it as an addition with its date: Demijohn raises the effective OG, so the ABV stays right.
  3. Your last readings. Add the last one or two gravity readings with their real dates. That is enough for the chart, the current ABV, and “looks finished” or “may be stalled”.
  4. What you have already added. Sulfite, sorbate, nutrients, fining. Demijohn uses these to warn about clashes and to fill the pre-bottling checklist.

From then on, add each new reading as you take it.

Coming from…

A notebook or printed log sheets. Keep them. Start Demijohn with the batches that are still fermenting or aging. Finished batches can stay on paper. Every batch also prints as a one-page sheet in the free version: open the batch, then Share this batch → Batch sheet (PDF, to print).

A spreadsheet. The same four steps for running batches. Demijohn can’t read a spreadsheet yet; importing a CSV file is planned for the next version. Your spreadsheet stays the place for anything older.

Other apps. If your old app can export your batches (CSV, JSON or a backup file), do it now and keep the file somewhere you control. Demijohn will import CSV and JSON in the next version. Until then, start your running batches with the four steps.

A digital hydrometer. Keep using it. Demijohn doesn’t pair over Bluetooth, on purpose. The next version will read the CSV file the device’s own software exports and put those points on the same chart.

Several apps at once, one for the log, one for the maths and a phone alarm for the nutrients. That is why Demijohn exists: the calculators open from the batch, the result goes into the log, and the next step becomes a reminder.

Your data, from day one

  • Batches, readings and notes are unlimited in the free version and stay on your phone. There is no account and no server.
  • More → Make a backup saves everything to one file. Keep it wherever you keep files. More → Restore a backup brings it back on a new phone.
  • More → Export all batches (CSV) (Pro) writes every batch and reading as a spreadsheet with plain column names, so you can always leave again.
  • Units stay as you set them, per batch, and an update never resets them.

Doses are estimates. Add in steps, test again, follow the product label. For personal use only.
